Yoga and the Chakras

Yoga originated in India about 4000 years ago, within the Hindu cultural tradition. The chakras were first mentioned in ancient Indian texts around 3000 years ago, and the symbolism that is recognised today emerged within the next 1000 years.

Chakras were perceived as centres of energy within the body. But they are an imaginary concept, not a physical reality.

If you practise yoga, you do not have to believe in chakras. However, if you imagine them, you can add a whole new dimension of awareness and control to your yoga.

This term, we will focus on the chakra system and each of the chakras in turn:

  1. The Chakra System – nerve centres along the spine
  2. Base or Root Chakra – at the base of the spine
  3. Sacral or Pelvic Chakra – at the back of the abdomen
  4. Solar Plexus Chakra – at the level of the navel
  5. Heart Chakra – at the level of the heart
  6. Throat Chakra – at the back of the neck
  7. Brow Chakra – on the forehead between the eyebrows
  8. Crown Chakra – at the top of the head
